Spaceballs: Industrial Strength Hair Dryer

A model I created for a Spaceballs-themed Halloween costume. Princess Vespa can't live without it! The hair dyer is hollow so it can serve as a purse and the grill detaches for easy access.

My print bed is only 180 x 180 mm, so the model is broken up into pieces that fit on that bed and that can be glued together. The trickiest part are the quadrants making up the body. I created a lip and glued them using a generous amount of epoxy, and held the joining lips together using binder clips while the epoxy hardened. Then polyfilla, sanding and so on to smooth it all out, then a couple of coats of white spray paint.

The initial grill design was held in place by magnets, but we found that it came out too easily, so I ended up adding a small tab that you can print out and attach to the hair dryer in place of the magnets, and they would slot into the grill. This mechanism might not all be perfectly reflected in the model at this time as I modified it post-printing.

The words were just a template I created and printed on an inkjet printer, then cut out with a x-acto knife. I taped the template to the shaft and then used some acrylic paint to brush on the black and the flames.
