This router template may be used to create short and long keyhole slots for picture frames. It is meant to be used with a 3/8" keyhole router bit (such as the Freud 70-104 or Rockler 92024) and a 5/8" short shank template guide bushing.
This model is parametric and can be customized with OpenSCAD to produce slots of any length.
Instructions
- Use double-sided adhesive to secure the template.
- Lower the router bit so that cuts a keyhole in the middle of your workpiece (approximately 7/16" beneath the template for ¾" stock)
- Align the guide bushing into the template and begin routing.
Notes
- It is beneficial to use dust extraction when routing the keyhole slot since sawdust is not easily ejected from within the slot during routing.
- A pilot hole may be drilled with a 3/8" or 10mm Forstner bit prior to routing the keyhole slot. Doing so reduces the amount of work performed by the router and allows the router to be more easily used with a fixed base instead of a plunge base.
