I needed a way to scan 126 cinematic film, which has the same film height as a 35mm film, but the image area is taller than the one in 35mm film and the frame has a square aspect ratio. I own a Minolta Dimage Dual III AF-2840 scanner and my first attempt was to create a 126 cinematic film holder tray based on the original Minolta 35mm trays. Unfortunately this attempt failed, because the image area exceeded the scanners sensor width and this resulted in getting cropped scans! Since I spent so much time on creating this 126 cinematic film tray, I decided that I should just create an adapter for my DSLR camera that fits on the lens hood mount and accepts this tray. A benefit from making it compatible with the Minolta tray is that I could also use the original Minolta 35mm trays that I own. And then I figured.. people may be looking for spare Minolta trays to fix their old scanners! So I included a model of the 35mm tray as well. And yes, both trays work in the original scanner!

Required for scanning:

  • Nikon camera with Nikkor Z 70-200 F2.8 77Ø (or lens using same lens hood mount)
  • Macro rings (I stacked 11 + 18 mm rings to get the focus within 5cm distance of the lens)
  • CS-LITE Camera Scanning Light Source from CineStill

Compatible film formats:

  • 35mm film
  • 126 cinematic film

Printing instructions:

  • PLA Material
  • 0.2 Layer Height
  • 0.4 Nozzle size

Cs-Lite Nikkor 77 Adapter specific settings:

  • No support, just print it with the flat side on the print bed

Cs-Lite case Minolta Tray adapter specific settings:

  • Support is required
  • After printing remove support in tray area AND between lens hood mount lock rings

Tray specific settings:

  • Support is required

All connectors are inspired by the Nikon Lens hood mount. To assemble the scanner just plug the Tray adapter in the Cs-Lite adapter and turn it 90 degrees to lock it in place. Then install the entire unit on your lens as if it is a lens hood. Do not use force to install it. If the adapter is stuck and won't turn and lock on your lens, you may have some support material left between the lens hood locking rings!
