General information
At the end of 2024, I set up version 11 of Helmut Weigl's RoeTest. In the process, I created some 3D designs that I am making available to the community in this collection. About this Design
This design is not for the faint hearted! I struggled with whether to release it or not - but I decided to give it a go. The parts are large and need to be printed with high precision. You also need to add parts made of wood and aluminum. Be warned!
The design consists of the following parts:
- Two side panels side-panel-left.stl and side-panel-right.stl After printing with high precision (see section about shrinkage below!) you must screw them to wooden multiplex boards and trim these boards to size. Also drill M3 and M4 screw holes with countersunks for flathead screws M3x20mm / M4x20mm
- A front panel split into front-panel.stl for the black part and front-panel-text.stl for the colored text part. Either perform a multi material print or combine them to a single solid part. Add 4pcs. M3xM5x6mm thread reduction screws on the side for mounting.
- A back panel split into back-panel.stl for the black part and back-panel-text.stl for the colored text part. Either perform a multi material print or combine them to a single solid part. Add 4pcs. M3xM5x6mm thread reduction screws on the side for mounting.
- The board holders board-holder.stl to safely hold all the PCBs to the main panel. The two side board holders need to be screwed on. I don't remember the screw sizes but I guess it was 2pcs. M3x6mm or M3x8mm…
- You can optionally use the foot-drill-template.stl to drill holes for mounting four or more feet to the wooden panel (see this design for feet that can be printed from ordinary TPU for a nice set of feet).
- The other stl files preview_*.stl are not to be printed, but rather are ürovided as previews from my other RoeTest designs that are only required by OpenSCAD for a more complete preview.
In Addition to the printed parts you will also need:
- 5pcs 402mm Aluminum extrusions 10mm by 20mm. You must tapp M4 threads!
- 2pcs wooden multiplex boards of at least 330mm x 130mm x 12mm
- 3.0x12mm countersunk screws for mounting the printed side panels to the wooden boards
- M3x20mm screws for mounting the side panels
- M4x20mm screws for mounting the side panels
The recess in the side panels must exactly fit the profile of the aluminum extrusions, the RoeTest front panel and the mounts (see RoeTest mounts). If it does not fit you must scale the print in the slicer! Make test prints!
Important: Compensating for part shrinkage
Since the larger template is quite large, you should compensate for material shrinkage: Print a sample using the same material and settings and measure shrinkage of the printed parts compared to the model. Then in the slicer apply a size scale factor in x- and y- direction. In my designs I usually have to use a factor of around 1.0025…1.0045 to compensate for my PETG material.
After the case is finished, I recommend the following:
- Cut out the recess for the bottom center aluminum bar on one of the side panels. So you can remove the bottom bar to access the daughter boards w/o having to disassemble all of the case.
- Add ground wired to all of the aluminum extrusions!
