I wanted to come up with a game that was based on the basic gameplay of Craps. Hazardous crawl is my first attempt.
Before we get into gameplay, let's start with the build:
Here's an exploded view of the board:
The board consists of the following:
Some notes on the prints:
The drawers have two slots on the bottom side. I printed these without supports, but needed to clean out each edge, as a small bit of filament stops each drawer from “popping” into place on the base:
Next, glue the drawer end onto the drawer without the two flanges. The largest part should face upward:
With all 4 drawers glued, place one in each corner. They should “pop” onto the sliding tracks built into the base:
Next, place both frames overtop of each set of drawers. These keep the top board more sturdy, and keep each drawer on track:
Add some glue to the connection slots on the back of the board top, and place it onto the frame. The assembly is complete! Be sure to print 4 sets of 3 tokens for each crawler:
Optional dice:
I've included a model set for dice, if you prefer. I have separated the core, primarily for multicolor prints. This limits print time while still sporting a secondary color for each “dot”. They can also be printed in single color as well. I designed them with a tolerance of .15mm, but you may want to add a dab of glue, for extra security while throwing them around:
Gameplay Instructions (WIP)
Objective
Be the first player to move all three of your crawlers (tokens) from the Start position to the Finish Line. Use dice rolls to advance your crawlers while navigating hazards along the way.
Components
1. Game Board:
• A straight track with 12 spaces: Start, positions 1–10, and Finish.
• Four drawers integrated into the board, one for each player to store their crawlers.
2. Crawlers:
• Each player has 3 crawlers (tokens), stored in their designated drawer until they are brought onto the board.
3. Dice:
• Two standard six-sided dice.
Setup
1. Place the board in the center of the table.
2. Each player selects a color, opens their designated drawer, and places their 3 crawlers inside.
3. Crawlers remain in the drawer until brought onto the board.
4. Determine turn order randomly. Gameplay proceeds clockwise.
Gameplay
1. Rolling to Enter the Crawl
• On their turn, a player rolls both dice.
• To bring a crawler onto the board, the player must roll a 7 or 11:
• When a 7 or 11 is rolled, the player selects one crawler from their drawer and places it on position 1.
• Crawlers must be brought onto the board one at a time.
2. Moving Crawlers
• Once at least one crawler is on the board, players roll both dice on their turn to determine movement.
• The roll result dictates what happens:
• 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10: Move one crawler forward by one space.
• 7 or 11: Move one crawler backward by one space.
• If a player has 1 or more crawlers not yet on the board, rolling a 7 or 11 negates needing to move a crawler back one space as long as position 1 is not already occupied.
• 2, 3, or 12: No movement this turn.
• Important Note: Rolling a valid number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) advances the crawler by one space, regardless of the sum of the dice.
3. Strategic Choices
• On each roll, the player chooses which crawler to move.
• Example: A roll of 6 allows a player to move one crawler forward by one space. They can choose any crawler currently on the board.
• Players may spread progress across all three crawlers or focus on advancing one quickly.
4. Reaching the Finish Line
• When a crawler reaches position 11, the player must roll a 7 or 11 to move that crawler into the Finish position.
• Exact Roll Required: Only a roll of 7 or 11 can move a crawler into the Finish space. Any other roll results in no movement for that crawler.
• Free from The Crawl: Once a crawler reaches the finish line, it can be moved off the board, making room for the next two crawlers.
Winning the Game
• The first player to move all three crawlers into the Finish position wins the game.
Key Gameplay Example
1. Rolling to Start:
• Player 1 rolls a 7, selecting one crawler from their drawer and placing it on position 1.
• Player 2 rolls a 6 and does not move because none of their crawlers are on the board yet.
2. Advancing Crawlers:
• Player 1 rolls a 6 and moves their crawler from position 1 to position 2.
• Player 2 rolls an 11 and brings their first crawler onto the board at position 1, and ends their turn.
3. Reaching the Finish:
• Player 1 rolls a 7, moving their crawler from position 11 to the Finish. Two more crawlers remain to complete their objective.
Tips for Success
1. Prioritize Early Progress: Get your crawlers on the board quickly to maximize your chances to move forward.
2. Spread or Focus: Decide whether to advance one crawler far ahead or spread progress across all three to mitigate risks.
Get ready to unleash your crawlers, and race to victory, and escape Hazardous Crawl!
