Japanese Kumiko is a woodworking technique where decorative patterns are made using slotted wood slab rather than nails and screws. The traditional pattern Mikado represents prosperity and eternal life.

I have etched the Mikado pattern onto standard gridfinity bins with press-fit magnet holes, at a 0.4mm depth. The bins can be nested. They currently come in 5, 6, and 8u heights, and 1x1, 1x2, 1x3, 2x2, 2x3, and 3x3 widths. I can make different sizes if desired although the pattern doesn't work well at smaller heights.

This work was inspired by Exabyde's Kumiko Mikado bins, however, I found that the bin itself wasn't useful for my work. I needed a bin that was thicker so I could print it successfully with PETG, with magnet holes, in a taller height, and with a pattern deep enough I could print it in multiple colors. So I ended up recreating the concept from scratch in OnShape, with my own twist on the design. The pattern itself, Kumiko Mikado, is traditional, and represents prosperity and eternal life.

These bins are printed using Overture PETG on a Prusa XL with a 0.4mm nozzle.
