We have friends from New Hampshire and I wanted to make a little something for them for Christmas. Thought I'd try a “stained-glass” version of the NH state bird, the Purple Finch. It was a lot harder than I thought as it had purple and green, which messed with blending. It required three tries and splitting it into three parts to get the purple and the green: a blue part, a red part and a yellow part.

***IMPORTANT*** All the parts are very thin, especially the base layer, so special care is needed to remove them from the build plate. It is probably best to use some glue stick as a release agent for the PETG and to cool them completely before trying.

When joining the parts be sparing with the adhesive, especially in the lighter parts. The adhesive will change the colors if it is not behind the darker parts. I use some around the very edge and a few inner opaque areas to keep the glue from showing. If spread thin and uniformly, it should not show too much.

Note that though there are three parts, each part has only ONE filament swap. So, it should be easy to use ANY FDM printer to make this model. That is, no AMS/MMU/CFS is really needed.

I used 0.08mm layers to speed printing with minimal lose in detail.

Part 1: (Blue)

Project: Purple_Finch_Front_PETG_v3.hfp
Print at 100% infill with a layer height of 0.08mm with a base layer of 0.16mm

The Model is 150x154.94mm in size
You may print at higher layer heights below the Min Depth of 0.16mm
The Max Depth is 0.88mm and the Actual Depth is 0.88mm

Filaments Used:
PETG GeeeTech Transparent Transmission Distance: 100
PETG Kaaber Blue Transmission Distance: 3.3
This print uses 2 unique filaments

Swap Instructions:
Start with Transparent
At layer #2 (0.24mm) swap to Blue for the rest.

Part 2: (Red)

Project: Purple_Finch_Mid_PETG.hfp
Print at 100% infill with a layer height of 0.08mm with a base layer of 0.16mm

The Model is 150x154.94mm in size
You may print at higher layer heights below the Min Depth of 0.16mm
The Max Depth is 0.72mm and the Actual Depth is 0.72mm

Filaments Used:
PETG GeeeTech Transparent Transmission Distance: 100
PETG Kaaber Red Transmission Distance: 6.5
This print uses 2 unique filaments

Swap Instructions:
Start with Transparent
At layer #2 (0.24mm) swap to Red for the rest.

Part 3: (Yellow)

Project: Purple_Finch_Back_PETG.hfp
Print at 100% infill with a layer height of 0.08mm with a base layer of 0.16mm

The Model is 150x154.94mm in size
You may print at higher layer heights below the Min Depth of 0.16mm
The Max Depth is 0.8mm and the Actual Depth is 0.8mm

Filaments Used:
PETG GeeeTech Transparent Transmission Distance: 100
PETG Bambu HF Yellow Transmission Distance: 4
This print uses 2 unique filaments

Swap Instructions:
Start with Transparent
At layer #2 (0.24mm) swap to Yellow for the rest.

If substituting filaments, pick ones with the closest TD values. Use a transparent white, if possible. Otherwise, pick the one with a TD > 10 to minimize the color change it will cause.
