PDF

This is a toilet paper holder with a magnetically attached, sturdy shelf for your phone, glasses, decor, or whatever. The shelf also protects the TP from dust, toothpaste splashes, etc.

There are two versions of the holder for mounting with Tesa Powerstrips adhesive strips or for screwing onto a wall. Additionally, you can customize the holder in Onshape in case you use different adhesive strips or screws. More on that at the end of this documentation.

The design of this toilet paper holder is inspired by the one previously sold by the MoMA Design Store (image). However, the motivation to create it came from a Reddit post about the "Not MoMA Toilet Paper Holder" by maxdoes on Thingiverse, which was also inspired by the MoMA design.
I wanted to do my own version with a removable cover to experiment with different designs and potentially add additional features, and that doesn't require the use of a compressible spindle.

Toilet Paper Compatibility

I have tested the toilet paper holder with the regular toilet paper that can be found in European supermarkets.
The rolls are roughly 90-95mm wide with an outer diameter of about 120mm and about 44mm inner diameter of the cardboard core. It should work with slightly larger rolls too. You can customize the holder for different TP roll sizes in Onshape.

Required Parts

48x3mm neodymium disc magnetSupermagnete, Amazon

Note: You can still assemble this project even if you don't have the right magnets at hand. The shelf holds even without magnets. It just doesn't snap in place and may rattle when you use the toilet paper holder.

Adhesive Strip Version
QtyDescriptionSourcing
2Tesa Powerstrips or similar

The adhesive strip version was made for Tesa Powerstrips for tile and metal, which are 20mm wide and about 0.9mm thick. Both the 2kg and the 3kg versions should work. If you have other strips or double-sided tape (e.g. VHB tape) with similar dimensions that should work as well.

If you have different adhesive strips you can customize the depth and width of the adhesive channel in Onshape. More info on customization at the end of the documentation.

Countersunk Screw Version
QtyDescriptionSourcing
23mm countersunk screw

The screw version has a hole diameter of 3mm and a countersink for screw heads up to 8mm in diameter. The holes are spaced 70mm apart.

If you want to use 3.5mm or 4mm screws you can ream the hole with a drill bit. For thicker screws I'd recommend customizing the hole size on Onshape.

Printing

Print the parts in the original orientation. All STLs are pre-rotated for printing.

Recommended Settings
  • Material: PETG, PLA, etc.
  • Extrusion width: 0.4 or 0.45mm
  • Layer height: 0.2mm
  • Perimeters: 4
  • Infill: 20%
  • Supports: no
Prevent Lifting Corners

To prevent corners from lifting during printing, consider adding mouse ears to the thin ends of the shelf. Mouse ears are small extensions added to the corners of a part to increase surface contact and reduce warping during printing. There are many videos online that show how to add them.

Assembly

Step 1 - Insert magnets into holder

The magnets are press-fit. Use a tool, such as a vise or parallel jaw pliers, to press the magnets into the printed part. You can add a small dot of superglue into the magnet holes.

Step 2 - Insert magnets into shelf

Using the same method as in step 1, press the magnets into the shelf part. Pay attention to the polarity. The shelf will attach to the holder so the magnets must be installed the opposite way.

Step 3 - Add adhesive strips

Stick the adhesive strips into the channel on the holder. Leave the pull tab of the adhesive strips protruding beyond the part for easier removal later.

Installation

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the adhesive strips you are using regarding pressure activation, etc.
Attach the holder on the desired mounting surface. Slide the toilet paper onto the holder from the side. Then place the shelf on the holder.

Customization

This project can be customized in Onshape to accommodate different TP roll sizes, magnet sizes, adhesive strips, and screw sizes. You don't need an account to export customized parts.

>> CUSTOMIZE IN ONSHAPE <<

Click the link above to access the Onshape project. Follow the screenshots below to see what to change and where to click. In the upper left, adjust the configuration to your requirements. Then, in the lower left, right-click on the parts and select "Export" from the context menu.

In the Export dialog, select STL as the format and make sure to set the units to millimeters.
