A simple coaster with a powerful message.

Introduction

The Coexist logo was originally created by the Polish graphic designer Piotr Młodożeniec in a 2000 international art competition sponsored by the Museum on the Seam for Dialogue, Understanding and Coexistence. The original version was one of dozens of works displayed as large outdoor posters in Jerusalem in 2001.  The original logo was meant to symbolize tolerance and unity among different religions.

Mlodozeniec is the son of an iconic Polish poster designer, Jan Mlodozeniec, and his logo was originally meant to provide a lasting memory of Piotr’s father. Unfortunately, the logo's journey hasn't been smooth due to unauthorized use, commercialization and criticism:

  • Unauthorized Use: A group of college students from Indiana incorporated a company called Coexist, LLP, and started using the logo without Młodożeniec's permission. They even trademarked their version and began suing others who used it;
  • Commercialization: The logo has been widely commercialized, appearing on bumper stickers, T-shirts, and other merchandise. This commercialization has led to debates about the true meaning and intent behind the logo;
  • Criticism: Some critics argue that the logo oversimplifies complex religious and cultural differences, and that its use on bumper stickers and other items can come off as preachy or insincere.

Despite these controversies, the Coexist logo remains a powerful symbol for many who advocate for peace and understanding among different faiths and cultures during these difficult times.
