Rolling Knife Sharpener

This rolling knife sharpener is inspired by other commercially available knife sharpeners. I tried another design that I found on printables, but I didn't like it at all as it rattled and had a lot of inherent design play. But the main problem were the sanding discs. I ordered diamond files, but I found out that I am not able to cut them properly in round shape. 

On Amazon I found an good alternative (link below) that came at a reasonable price (hopefully still available). I bought two sets of discs (400/1000 and 1000/3000) for 24 euros per set.

These discs came with a 12x1.0 thread. Of course I could have used metal screws to fix them, but I wanted to find out if it it possible to use printed threads. And ... it works.

Print settings

• Inner part - 1 pcs
• Outer part - 1 pcs
• Spacer - 2 pcs

• Prusament PETG - Jet Black
• 0.2 mm layer height
• 3 perimeters
• 15% infill for outer part
• 25% infill for inner part
• for stability of the thread in the lower and upper 18.5mm 100% infill
• two layer combined infill
• fuzzy skin on outer shell of outer part
• all parts with the circular shape on the bed

Final conclusion

This is not an original Horl disc sander. I have had the opportunity to test the Horl 2 and it feelt amazing. The weight is awesomeg and the build quality is excellent, but so is the hefty price tag. If you want to get as close as you can at a third of the price, this is your way to go.

Assembly

1. Its pretty obvious how to assemble but let me guide you through the steps in the order that worked for me
2. push the inner part into one of the ball bearings
3. push this assembly into the outer part
4. push the second ball bearing into place
5. put the two spacers over the threads
6. screw the discs on the inner part (keep in mind its not a metal screw)

Outlook

There will be a knife holder and a storage box for the roller and the discs. But its not ready yet. Stay tuned.
