A height adjustable hydroponics plant pot made with 3d printing in mind.

I made this design mainly because net cups made for hydroponics where I live are fairly expensive and they don't allow me to use whatever media I want due to the hole sizes.

This design should block out light, keep the media in place even with rots growing between them, allow for aeration and water uptake. The design also have a large lip to keep the pot/cup in place so it accommodates for a large range of hole sizes.

Advantages with having a height adjustable pot is being able to let roots have more aeration or more access to water, especially when using a kratky system being able to adjust the height can be a big advantage and might even prevent plants from dying due to lack of either water or oxygen.

If you are new to hydroponics I suggest you read up on it as it is a very fascinating subject that needs more attention, it can in fact be a fairly forgiving way to grow plants if done correctly and got a lot of advantages to growing traditionally in soil.

Design specifics:

  • The threads have been scaled up 1.8% to accomodate for inaccuracies in 3D printing (I have test printed a lot to find the correct margin)
  • You choose your own growing media, the holes have been sized so even media like for example clay pellets are held in place
  • Ability to height adjust the pot
  • Easy to print on any printer, very little overhangs

Note: This print was imported from Thingiverse, I believe that with newer 3d printers that uses input shaping and is better tuned, the threads could be a bit loose. Leave a comment if you experience this so I can adjust them. I have since had good success with the net cup and used it in an experiment which used rabbit manure for hydroponics.

Print Settings

No supports, 0.15mm layer height, but 0.2 will most likely work. No need for supports. I printed it in PLA but I recommend a PETG brand that blocks all light.
