This 12v geared motor modification attaches to the original Easy StrandBeest model without having to modify the original in any way.
Printed parts required are the main motor mount, a lid to hide the motor and a gear drive spindle. You also need to print a second original 60t gear if you want to retain the main sail and a new clip to replace the original.
Parts all printed in PLA.
Other parts include the Reversible Geared Motor (model number YG2732) which I purchased in Australia at Jaycar Electronics. It's a common size available online too. You will also need some thin wires and a 12v power source, some soldering required.
To assemble, solder the wires to the motor and feed through the narrow cable run, then install the motor with the shaft end first and seat the motor home while drawing the cables through to avoid pinching.
Then remove the end plate from the StrandBeest, slide the motor mount onto the frame and reinstall the other end plate. If retaining the sail, remove the clip and replace with the new smaller one.
Then you can add the second 60t gear and slide the new gear shaft into place. Depending on the quality of your print, you may need to adjust the clearance onto the motor shaft (I used a little heat to soften it).
Once assembled you can power the motor to make the Beest walk!
Notes - don't try and back drive the motor by turning the sail, you will break something.
The author remixed this model.
My additions to the Easy StrandBeest include a motor mount with lid, a new retaining clip for the sail and a geared shaft to connect the motor to the crank gear.
