Do you like gifts the recipient will love, but only after they've struggled to figure them out?  Fellow slightly evil gift givers, enjoy the Mosaic Puzzle Ornament.

I wanted an ornament version of Wim V's Mosaic Coaster as soon as I saw it.  It wasn't until I'd printed the parts that I realized how clever the construction is and what a good puzzle it would make.  Everything assembles and stays assembled with a strong friction fit (no glue needed!) so anyone given a set can start on it immediately.

Printing Suggestions

  • Good bed adhesion is a must for all the tiny parts.
    • Those bed prep steps you usually skip, even though they help?  Do them.
    • Alternately, try brims then spend an eternity removing them all.  It's your call.
  • Use sequential printing if you have a multi-filament feeder (MMU, AMS, XL, etc.).
    • Once setup, all the pieces for one or multiple ornaments can be printed on one bed with no intervention and only 2 filament changes: all parts of each color print together then the filament changes.
      • See 2nd photo of parts for 2 ornaments on one 256x256 bed.
    • PrusaSlicer setting Sequential printing → Complete individual objects
    • This works because each set of different shapes is one STL that the slicer treats as a single object.  If you add/clone parts to print multiple ornaments at once, select and merge objects of the same shape.

Please share makes but I'd really like to hear how it goes if you gift a set.  Could the person figure it out and assemble the ornament without help?  Were they excited or did you get an eye roll when they got yet another weird plastic something from you?
