More about the HSTV-L

1977:

Its early 1977, just 2 years after the Vietnam war. The US government is looking for a tank prioritizing survivability and speed, rather than heavy armor, and being all around a more superior design to the M551 Sheridan, the project commenced. The new High Survivability Test Vehicle - Lightweight (or HSTV-L) was to mount a 75mm Ares Incorperated XM274 CTA smoothbore cannon. It had to fit in the new radical AGS requirements, having to have the capability to be airdropped at any moment from a tactical airlifter, it needed to be lethal, have high survivability, sustainability, and of course, easy deployability.

1981:

Disaster struck upon the project. The HSTV-L was not capable of fitting the new AGS requirements, no matter what. It had insufficient technology to co-op with the AGS requirements. Lets look a quick overview, which ultimately cancelled this mighty project.

Why the project was cancelled:

It is, wouldn't you know it, the 70mm ARES cannon, as during its final ammo testing, it was making round overpressure to extremely dangerous levels, and against its soviet counterparts, like the T-72 making is first appearance in 1973, and the T-80 just 3 years later of than the the T-72, before the project even started, made it questionable from the very biggening.

The point of the HSTV-L project

The point of this project/3d model is to retain the important history of this tank, as it gave important information on various aspects of a tank. From survivability to a more stable gun, it really was a tank worth mentioning, and now, you to can have this (as of 2024) 47 year old piece of history on your desk, assembled like a little model!
