This is used to add passive air exchange for use with mycology grow boxes. Standard cotton rounds are used for inserts, and they can be replaced safely and effectively, even when the cotton rounds become wet. Ideally, mushrooms require oxygen to grow and a means to exchange CO2 outside of the grow box, while still maintaining a clean and sanitized environment.

Additional parts:

Alternatively, any flat cotton fabric will work when cut to size.

Special Printing Instructions:

The bottom piece needs to have air passage through it, but the part as presented is solid. In order to print this part correctly, add a cylinder part modifier to the bottom piece in the center, and adjust the print settings as follows:

  • Fill Density: 25%
  • Bottom Solid Layers: 0
  • Top Solid Layers: 0
  • Infill: Honeycomb

The net effect of these settings allows you to print the bottom with a nice honeycomb to allow air to pass through the physical part and then be functionally filtered by the cotton round.

Assembly:

  • Align bottom print to grow box and mark the size of the hole with a sharpie.
  • Cut a hole in your grow box
  • Insert the bottom part through the still air box, preferably from the inside.
  • Insert a cotton round flat into the bottom insert piece
  • Screw the top piece over the bottom piece tightly, allowing it to hold the cotton round firmly into place over the bottom piece.

As an extra measure, consider spraying the cotton round with 70% isopropyl alcohol to remove any remaining pathogens that may compromise your mycelium.
