Beginning a series of models of rocketships based on classic science fiction art from the mid-20th century, this is modeled on the somewhat absurd but classically simple rocket portrayed in this classic Soviet propaganda poster, which reads “Our triumph in Space - a hymn to the Country of the Soviets.”
(This is widely used around the web. The best source I found is at The Planetary Society.)
Given the simplicity of the design I decided to design this entirely in Tinkercad. I will go back to Fusion for any future designs in this series, but it was interesting.
I included a full model of this as one piece, and it is probably printable that way with supports, but it is a bit too tall for the Mk3 that way. I sized it so that the fuselage printed by itself maxes out the Z height of my Mk3S. It needs no supports, but I put a brim on it for better bed adhesion, at the suggestion of PrusaClippy. I am not sure that's necessary.
The fins are printed flat, and the pylons are then printed laid down. I think the pylons could be printed better than my version, though. Probably if you carefully oriented them at an angle so that the flat mating surface for the fins was exactly horizontal, and created snug supports on a raft below that, they'd look tidy. Alternatively, making that mating surface run vertical with the pylons on their sides might be even better for making a good glue surface. With my print, there are stairsteps, which are best cleaned up with a knife before gluing.
If you are arranging the fins and pylons for yourself, you will need to break the STLs apart into individual parts in your slicer. If you make 3 fins in each orientation, you can alternate them so that each pair's facing sides will be more similar, being either top or bottom layers.
The author marked this model as their own original creation.
