A great deal of care must go into a design before there’s nothing left to optimize. I think we can all agree that Zack Friedman’s Gridfinity system has become a benchmark for organizational systems across sharing platforms. However, every time I’ve printed one of these components, I’ve been struck by the lack of optimization in the models. They often require more material and print time than necessary to achieve the same functionality.

While there have been notable improvements to the containers, the holding grids have tended to be overly complex, leading to higher material consumption and extended print times.

To contribute my small part, I decided to create an optimized grid. I pushed the design down to the smallest printable volume, then adjusted the dimensions to ensure the model retained enough strength while maintaining the same functionality as the original.

I published all sizes possible on an 300x300mm printbed, from 1x1 to 7x7 modules. 

The result? A 50% savings in material usage and a printing time cut in half. I recommend pairing this grid with optimized containers as well—there’s no reason to use more filament than necessary or wait twice as long for your prints. Happy printing and happy organizing, everyone!

Securing grids on support
As for securing the grids in place, there is a far simpler solution than overcomplicating the design or using double sided tape. I use few small drops of B7000 glue applied at random cross-sections will secure the grids effectively. This method avoids adding unnecessary thickness, keeps the support intact, and allows you to easily unstick and reposition the grids when needed. Just use a container between grids to allow precise alignment during the 3 minutes the glue is setting. Enjoy!

This is actually a redrawing. The goal was to optimize the file for 3D printing by minimizing material usage and printing time. I streamlined the design to the minimal shape necessary to fulfill its function.
