An easy 3D-printed suet / salo holder for winter birds!

Designed as a hanging feeder, it securely holds the food while allowing easy swapping when it's empty
Design consists of two plates, one of which easily slides off to refill the food when necessary

Perfect for helping feathered friends stay fed in the cold!
Make sure you use either specialized suet, bird food or unsalted pig fat

You will need:

1x SlidePlate
1x NailPlate
8x 50mmx2mm nails (length doesn't really matter, it will change the height of the feeder)
optional NailHelper – will help hammering nails in

  • Hammer the nails straight into the NailPlate (use NailHelper for easier alignment and save your finger from the hammer's wrath!)
    • Use something hard as working surface, it will be marked a bit with nail points (I just used nearby curb)
    • Stop when nails poke through a bit or when they hit the surface you are using
    • Check if your nails are straight to begin with (surprisingly low percentage of mine were)
    • If hammered a bit crooked – just straighten them by hand!
  • Thread some wire or a zip tie or a string or anything else so the ends poke through the nailless side of the NailPlate
  • Add food
  • Slide the SlidePlate over the nails, making sure the outside ones are clicked into place
  • Hang on a tree in a safe place

Instructions seem complicated, but it's really: “Hammer some nails and hang it on a tree”

Printing:

Ideally, use PETG or similar (PLA will crack when you hammer the nails in)
3 or more perimeters
20%+ infill
3+ top and bottom layers

It's a very simple print to allow making feeders fast
6 sets took a bit under an hour printing for me

Share some feeding birds photos if you'll manage to take some!
