I wanted to make a nice desk ornament for somebody who recently started working in law offices for Oklahoma's Indigent Defense System and found jimjimjimmyjim's “old lady justice - statue - gubbins” model on Thingiverse. jimjimjimmyjim has published literally thousands of incredible models, so be sure to check out the overwhelming body of his work: https://www.thingiverse.com/jimjimjimmyjim/designs
jimjimjimmyjim's model is intended for SLA printing, however, the bulk of that design does print successfully on FDM machines. As my machines are all of the low end budget FDM variety, I took some liberties on the two parts of jimjimjimmyjim's model that did give me some grief while printing, the sword blade and the scale.
I've included two versions of the main body of jimjimjimmyjim's model, with and without a base for bed slinging stability.
I print the main body as she is oriented in the STL file with organic “tree” supports to buildplate only. I print the sword blade as oriented in the STL without supports, although I add a brim to keep it stable. I print the scale hanger as oriented in the STL with normal supports to buildplate only, and lastly, I print the bowls as oriented in the STL with no supports or other considerations. I used 20% infill on the main body, but 100% infill on the accessory pieces to give those parts some strength.
The photo of my make of this model is of the prototype print. Since I wanted to print this in a nice marble PLA filament, but only have enough of that material for printing one of this model, I did the prototype in plain white PLA so I could determine what was going to cause me grief while printing. Once I've made the actual desk ornament in the marble filament, I'll post photo's of that.
The lady, in her native form stands 20 centimeters tall. Given the level of detail jimjimjimmyjim put in to her design, I wouldn't recommend scaling her down any further.
UPDATE 11152024: I haven't printed her in the marble PLA I have set aside for her, but I did have an old spool of silk copper PLA I thought I'd try. I liked her well enough I'm replacing the plain white print as the cover photo.
UPDATE 11202024: I added a base and blank name plate to finish the desk ornament I was making. The blank name plate can be easily edited to add a name, organization, etc or it could be painted on or otherwise adorned. I added the name and organization for whom I made this for so that the font would be 1mm raised, making it easy to run a black sharpie over for darkening the text. I changed the default image to the finished model as well. Whether or not I reprint her in marble PLA I suppose will depend on how well this copper version is received.
The author remixed this model.
I mirrored jimjimjimmyjim's model as I've always seen the young lady as being “right handed”. The main goal of this remix was for easy printability on FDM machines, so I separated the sword blade and most of the scale from the base model and made those parts stronger for easy printing and gluing.
