I always want to wear a poppy for Remembrance Day but always wind up poked by the straight pin versions or end up having them fall off. Last year I lost the backing off the flag pin that I had used to replace the straight pin for a few years so this year I wanted to get away from pins altogether. Adding magnets that I had on hand for Gridfinity seemed like the obvious choice to try.
I paused after the 11th layer to add the magnets then changed filaments at layer 16 to print the centre in black. I did one with the Monotonic top surface pattern and one with the Concentric pattern. I find the Concentric to look less obviously 3D printed.
Gridfinity magnets provide a decent amount of holding force through a shirt but are a bit weak on coats. I used cheap magnets from AliExpress so using high quality, rated Neodymium magnets may improve the hold.
As there are no donations associated with printing this poppy directly, please take the time to donate to your local veteran's organization instead.
The author remixed this model.
I added four cavities for 6mm x 2mm Gridfinity magnets to be embedded in the poppy. I created a matching back that also contains 4 magnets in the same alignment so that the poppy can be attached to clothing without a pin.
