Summary

A Maker coin is a quick, creative, and easy way to test and create a palette of your 3D Printer Filaments. It was created by Angus Deveson, the face of the Maker's Muse YouTube channel.  (Source 1: Maker's MuseSource 2: 3D Make)

Objective

The goal of this project is to create a Maker coin with my own, individual, creative design. The maker coin should fit within a 6cm x 6cm x 1.25cm volume.

Lesson Plan & Activity

  • Maker must be made from an initial revolve resulting in a coin that is 6cm in diameter and 1.25cm in thickness.
  • Must not require ANY supports, (no supports).
  • Should be gear-esque in nature.
  • NO moving parts, (no gyroscopes, fidget spinners, etc.)
  • Must slope downwards towards the center in some fashion.

Inspiration

I created my maker coin based on my passion for music. Having studied music and being a vocalist for over a decade, I felt that creating a music-related maker coin would be really cool! Specifically, writing the sheet music of a song I like.

My original idea was to draw the song Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley, because that's an iconic song, however the song is not conveniently placed on the staff. However, I found that Ariana Grande's Song No Tears Left To Cry fit perfectly on the staff. Since it fit well, and I always looked up to big pop singers like Ariana Grande, I felt like this song was a great option.

Design Choices

Sometimes in the process of designing, some things change in the way I choose to design. Here are some of those changes:

  • Originally wanted to have a second part for the Initials Logo → Decided to do an engraving instead for the purpose of simplicity.
  • Originally didn't include an outer ring (gear-like) texture → Decided to add a small gear-like design as a final touch to the coin to fit the requirement.
  • Originally wanted to implement the song Never Gonna Give You Up → Decided to implement No Tears Left To Cry instead.
  • Originally wanted to create a thin coin → Decided to completely change the coin's shape to allow flexibility in the engravings, and to fit the requirement.
  • Originally had an arrow at the end of my logo → Decided to do away with it, as it looked better without the arrow.
  • Originally had a thinner treble clef → Had to make the treble clef thicker since it wouldn't print well otherwise
