Instructions:

Constraint box:

  1. Create a new part in Solidworks
  2. Select front plane and create New Sketch
  3. Using the center rectangle tool, create a constraint box with midpoint lines centered on the origin.
  4. Using smart dimensions, set the vertical height of the box to 13 cm
  5. Still using smart dimensions set the horizontal width of the box to 6 cm
  6. Select the entire box for construction in the margin to the left – every line should be dashed

Triangles:

  1. Across the top starting 1 cm down (use smart dimensions to adjust to the correct height after creating the line), make six horizontal construction lines and use the equal relation to make them the same length.
  2. Create six triangles from the 1 cm lines to the top of the restraint boxes across the top
  3. Put an equal relations on those diagonal lines.
  4. Delete any automatic parallel and perpendicular relations if necessary

Semi Circles:

  1. On the bottom of the constraint box, 1 cm up, create 3 horizontal construction lines going across and use the equal relation to make them the same length.
  2. Use the three point arc tool and start on one side of one of the 2 cm sections and end on the other side of it
    1. Do this for the other two as well and set them all equal with equal dimension
  3. These should touch the edge of the constraint box (tangent relation)

Eyes:

  1. 1.5 centimeters away from the edge, and 3 cm down from the top of the restraint box, make a circle
  2. Use a smart dimension to make the diameter of the circle 1 cm
  3. Mirror across the vertical midpoint line
  4. Select the circle and then select the Mirror Entities button
  5. Click Mirror About in the margin pop-up
  6. Select the center line, and then the check mark

Smile:

  1. Create a construction line that is parallel to the vertical side of the constraint box
    1. Use smart dimension to make it 1.5 cm away from the center of the middle line
    2. It should be 5 cm down from the top of the constraint box and 4 cm long
  2. Mirror this across the central vertical construction line
  3. Starting from the bottom of the line, create an arc going right that will end at the bottom of the other line
  4. Use smart dimensions to make the radius 1.5 cm
  5. Use the bidirectional off-set tool and make it 0.25 cm
  6. Add end caps

     1. Add in two construction lines by the sides of the box to lock it all in

Model origin

The author remixed this model.

Differences of the remix compared to the original

Only minor changes were made from the original outline: the dimensions of the eyes and small adjustments to the mouth.

We originally had the eyes have a diameter of 1 cm and were 1.5 cm away from the outside of the constraint box, 3 cm down from the top of the restraint box. This was changed to 1.06 cm for the diameter of the circles, 1.7 cm away from the outside of the constraint box, and 2.85 cm from the top.

For the mouth, the original dimensions were that it was 1.5 cm away from the side on the constraint box, the sides of the mouth were 4.5 cm and weren’t dimensioned away from anything, and the bottom arc was 1.5 cm. We kept the first 1.5 cm dimension as well as the 1.5 cm dimension on the arc, but changed the side mouth lines to 4 cm and added a smart dimension at the top of the line so that it was 5 cm down from the top of the restraint box.

The addition of the smart dimension connecting the mouth to the top of the constraint box was important because without it, the mouth wouldn’t be fully locked in. As for the other changes that were made, those were purely aesthetic changes. It still didn’t quite match the original when we finished. but it fared better than before.

The eyes were in the wrong place before, even though they were locked in, so that was adjusted as well.
