Description

This unit allows active chamber heating using a PTC heater of your chosen voltage & wattage on your Voron printer.

This unit is designed to mount to this…

Voron Enclosure Top Hat Remix

Included here is a retrofit kit so you can easily install the heater core module if you have already printed & are using the above linked Top Hat! See Retrofit folder in the files tab!

& its designed to be powered & controlled by this…

TARTARUS Canbus & SSR Module

It is compatible with the use of the standard Voron chamber LEDs.

This module MUST be fitted with a 120ºc thermal fuse to kill the system during an over-temperature event! Failure to do so is potentially life & property threatening! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!

This module MUST be fitted with a thermistor directly connected to & monitored by Klipper to function properly & safely! Max temp should be 105ºc at the very most!

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!

SAFETY FIRST!!!!

Get on Amazon & buy a pack of 120ºc inline Thermal fuses for your chosen voltage!!

SERIOUSLY YOU MUST HAVE THESE!!!

It must be installed on the main v+ power feed to your PTC heater & then placed in contact with the heater core in a location where it'll be subjected to the full heat of the unit when active!

The fuse MUST be CRIMPED inline with this power feed - DO NOT SOLDER IT!!

Seriously I'm not even joking, I'll say it again DO NOT SOLDER IT IN!

…What does solder do when it gets hot? Yep you got it. Melts!

Plus you stand a really good chance of popping the fuse by soldering it! So please be sure to crimp the fuse with the correct tools!

If you don't have them BUY THEM!!! This tiny little thing could save your life, your family's lives & your house & property! DO NOT OMMIT THIS!!!

Then insulate the fuse with some quality shrink tube insulation! IMPORTANT TOO! Don't buy cheap low quality stuff.

INSTALLATION

The Thermal fuse (Left red box below image) is properly insulated & installed here in front of the core of the heater.

The thermistor (Right red box below image) is installed in direct contact with the core of the heater & in direct airflow when the fan is on. Make sure your thermistor does NOT have continuity between either of its leads & any part of the heater core! IMPORTANT!

Also make sure its leads are insulated with shrink tube from the heater core!

Note: To install these units in the heater you will need to use a Dremel to cut away some plastic of the black cover so they fit correctly & are held securely but NOT pinched when assembled. Some silicone or thermal paste can help here if needed.

It helps to drill a hole for the thermistor in the black cover near the front edge, do not run the wires directly back in contact along the metal side of the heater core! You must keep the thermistor wires & metal core separated.

SECOND WARNING!

Failure to follow ANY of the above steps & warnings may result in seriously bad, expensive & possibly life threatening things happening! Again any & all outcomes if doing this are solely on you & are your responsibility & liability.

DO NOT PRINT & ATTEMPT THIS IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF HOW TO DO IT SAFELY!!

Printing

Print in ASA/ABS or better to Voron BOM specs.

For best results print the TARTARUS Heater Core Module on its open rear face using tree supports as needed inside & on the right mounting face. You don't need support everywhere inside the model, just on the side there & a ring around the heater core aperture as shown below. You can print it on its front face with no supports but it tends end up looking a bit messy.

For the TARTARUS Heater Core Module NEOPIXEL Carrier file use supports for the very edge of the LED cavity just to help it print cleanly. Print in transparent PETG!

NOTE: The tolerances of all these models are VERY tight! With only 0.1-0.15mm clearance in some places!!! Make sure your printer is set up well! They require exact fits that snap together!

Also make sure you use small gauge wires & have good clean soldering skills for the NeoPixel! that gap is tight!

DO NOT LEAVE A BAD REVIEW BECAUSE THINGS DON'T FIT - THEY DO!

If things don't fit please look into the setup & current state of tune of your printer & slicer profiles. Please make sure you give yourself the best chance possible.

Assembly

Install the TARTARUS Heater Core Module HALO NEOPIXEL Masking Disc v1.0 into the TARTARUS Heater Core Module HALO NEOPIXEL Carrier v1.3 if used with some good quality CA glue.

Then install the wired up & tested working Neopixel facing up in the slot in the side of the TARTARUS Heater Core Module HALO NEOPIXEL Carrier v1.3 making sure not to damage it by forcing the LED into the slot. To avoid damage use the thinnest wire you can get (30-32 AWG). You may need to widen the slot slightly for a good fit depending.

Now insert the assembley into the rear side of the TARTARUS Heater Core Module HALO NEOPIXEL v1.0. Be gentle it'll be a tight fit, you might need to wiggle it side to side a little & push it past the crossbar of the main body until it snaps into place. Don't break things here!

Install the heat set inserts into main printed body

Cut the two tabs off the PTC heater's black plastic cover

Install the thermal fuse & thermistor as described in the sections above.

CHECK FOR SHORTS &/OR OPEN CIRCUITS!

Insert the Heater core assembly into the rear of the TARTARUS Heater Core Module HALO NEOPIXEL v1.0 with the PTC cables off to the right side as looking from the rear, it'll only fit one way.

Now secure with the TARTARUS Heater Core Module Bracket NEOPIXEL v1.0 with the M3 8mm bolts.

Print & install the Top Hat model with the appropriate mounting holes on your printer.

Voron Enclosure Top Hat Remix

OR….

If you already have it installed but do NOT have the version with mounting holes, print & use the Retrofitting kit in the files section.

Place the printed templates on the left rear corner of the original top hat when looking at the printer from the FRONT & snap them into place. They are marked & only fit on way when the extension arms are touching the intended sides.

Use a 3.5mm drill bit to drill out the original top hat.

Be sure to drill at the same angle as the slanted sides of the top hat model & NOT horizontally. The results should look like this & align perfectly with the TARTARUS Heater Core Module HALO NEOPIXEL v1.0 mounting holes.

Now install the fully assembled heater module into the printer. Making your choice of cable routing.

Klipper Config & Use

The config below is for use with the TARTARUS Canbus & SSR Module, if you're not using this use it as a guide for the system.

The PID is set for a high powered AC heater running at 50% power! This has been purposefully set like this to lower the output as these PTC heater can be extremely fierce reaching intense printer melting temperatures!

DO NOT run yours at 100% power, it is dangerous to do so & will probably pop your thermal fuse within a minute or less. Then you'll have to strip the whole assembly to replace it!

No one wants that!!

DO NOT change the max_temp, as you want some headroom between the max temp for Klipper shutdown & the thermal fuse blowing.

Be sure to set your correct thermistor!

Before first use

  • Test all connections to the system
  • Double check all plugs & pins are matching & correct
  • Double check your config
  • Run for the first time with the heater powered down or disconnected from the SSR
  • Check correct operation of the thermistor
  • Check correct operation of the heater fan
  • Check correct operation of the SSR
  • Power the Printer off & reconnect the heater core
  • Edit the max_temp to 60ºc
  • Execute first test with the expectation that Klipper will shut you down at 60ºc
  • If not be ready with the Emergency Stop button & power switch!

IMPORTANT

Ideally when in use you should NOT set a temperature above 85-90ºc!!

Macro Control

You now need some macros to control this heater module & NeoPixel LED.

Check out my highly adaptive & automated macro pack! Suitable for most Klipper printers.
