Pulley, Gears and electricity! Teach your students about simple machines and motors!

Explore the magic of movement, power, and mechanics with an introduction to simple machines and motors! Dive into the world of pulleys, gears, and electricity, showing how each one can change the way force and energy are used in everyday life. With pulleys, you’ll see how lifting becomes easier, gears show how speed and power can be adjusted, and electricity brings it all to life by powering motors that drive these systems forward. Each concept is a gateway to understanding the building blocks of machines around us, setting the foundation for endless engineering possibilities!

You'll need:

608 Bearing - 2 (skateboard bearing)

String - to wrap around the spool on the drive pulley

Elastic Band - 2 to connect the drive and driven pulleys

Optional:

Small DC motor - 1

Zap strap - 1 or 2

Notes:

Motor holster is lose to accommodate a number of motors, placing an eraser under the motor is a good solution if you need to add a bit of ground clearance.

Belt and pulley ratios are as follows

  • Drive pulley r=14mm → r=42.5mm
  • Driven pulley r=14.204mm → r=38mm
  • Motor Spool r=7mm

In the same order..

  • First pulley: Spool for basket → large diameter on first pulley
  • Second Pulley: Small Diameter → Large Diameter
  • Motor Spool
