Description

PDF

This was the first engine I ever worked on and hot rodded back in the 70s.  The only model parts I found were on GrabCAD and those were not complete and were not functional.  A handful of random parts were used from GrabCAD.  Refer to the spreadsheet of parts to determine what parts were reused from GrabCAD.  Two parts were re-used as is and another five were modified out of a total of 315 parts.

The scale is 1:2.5.  This model has been divided into eleven sub-models due to the number of parts and complexity of the assembly.   The engine core is documented here along with the following additional models:

  1. VW Engine - Clutch and Flywheel

  2. VW Engine - Tin

  3. VW Engine - Ignition

  4. VW Engine - Oil and Gas

  5. VW Engine - Generator

  6. VW Engine - Carburetor

  7. VW Engine - Exhaust

  8. VW Engine - Stand

  9. VW Engine - Transaxle

  10. VW Engine - Starter

Start by assembling the engine and then add the additional parts in the order shown above.  All the required printed parts are documented here in the file VW Engine Parts.  There are both a pdf version and csv version if you wish to track the part status.  Each model has assembly instructions which contain the required hardware at the top of the instruction manual.  The filament colors can be any color you wish.  The colors shown are the actual engine part color/material.

When slicing the parts look at the cross section to make sure you have the percentage of infill adequate.  I would use at least 30% on most parts with 50% on the smaller gears and crankshaft/camshaft parts.

Updates:

  1. 2/25/2025: Included an assembled STL file of the major parts, no interior or small parts.

  2. 3/28/2025: Assembly Instructions Engine corrected, removed Crankshaft-Connecting Rod Journal and renamed Crankshaft-Connecting Rod Journal Small to Crankshaft-Connecting Rod Journal.

  3. 3/28/2025: Upgraded the lifters (Lifter-New.stl) so the push rod is easier to seat.
