Objective:

The objective is to build a replica Ghostclip with a partner using the software, solidworks, checking in at each individual step while making sure you and your partners ghostclip's are identical.

The Construction Instruction Section:

Starting off: Constraint box:

  1. Start off by choosing the rectangle tool and center it on the point of origin making sure that its the midpoint rectangle
  2. Two vertical lines that are 13 cm and two horizontal lines that are 6 cm.
  3. Add perpendicular relation to the lines

Top triangles:

  1. Create 6 equal wide horizontal line segments, 0.7 cm down from the top of the constraint box
  2. Create 6 triangles from the points, connected to the top of the constraint box
  3. Use relation tool to set the lengths of the triangle sides to be equal

Bottom Arcs

  1. Create 3 equal wide horizontal line segments, 0.8 cm up from the bottom of the constraint box
  2. create 3 arcs from the points connected to the bottom of the constraint box
  3. Use the relation tool to make the arcs tangent to the bottom of the box
  4. Use the relation tool to make the arcs equal to each other.

The body of the Ghost clip

  1. Set two vertical lines to 11.2 cm and leave the horizontal lines at 6 cm on the origin so the lines will be blacked out.

The eyes

  • Start by drawing a circle with the center dimension 1.9 cm down from the top and 1.1 cm away from the vertical side of the constraint box.
  • Make the diameter of the circle 1.1cm.
  • Use the mirror tool to copy this across the central vertical construction line.

Making the mouth

  1. make one vertical line on either side of the central vertical construction line that is 1.4 cm in from sides of the construction box.
  2. make the first lines 4.2cm long and 8cm up from the bottom of the constraint box
  3. Select the mirror tool and select the line that was previous made and copy it to the other side
  4. Using the 3 point arc tool select the two bottom ends of the mirrored lines then place the bottom of the arc. Make this arc tangent to each of the vertical lines with a manual relation.
  5. Select the offset tool. Click both vertical lines and the arc created and pull it out 0.3 cm when looking at the sidebar to the left of your screen make sure not to click bi direction lines; making 2 extra lines on both sides but make sure to select the end caps button which allows the software to make the arcs on the ends by itself..

Extrusion

  1. Exit the sketch
  2. Use the “Extrude Boss” tool to extrude the ghost by 0.15cm

Engraving

  1. Create a new sketch on the ghost’s top face
  2. Draw a horizontal construction line from the left side of the inside of the ghost’s mouth to the right side.
  3. Use the text tool to type your initial on the line, with a size of 1.50cm and center-aligned
  4. Repeat steps 26-27 with your last initial below the first initial
  5. Use the “Extruded Cut” tool to engrave the initials 0.075cm

Design Choices:

Vlad (my partner) and I started off this assignment by tracing a ghostclip and measures it, replicating the dimensions. Then we took these dimension and used it to create a plan for how we can replicate it in Solidworks. However, putting in these dimensions were not nearly as easy as what we though because of some difficulties we came upon.

The Bottom:

In the bottom when trying to add relations to the arcs Vlad and I added one to many and what happened is the system got overwhelmed by the extra relations and started to make some the other relations invalid. We had to change the imbalance by deleting the extra relations. When deleted these extra Fix dimensions simplified the figure so the ghostclip became valid again.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Smile:

While making the smile there were too many relations that were added to the figure. We can tell because the lines attached aren't grey meaning that the relations are the problem. The relations that were the most problematic were the co-linear and vertical line. When these were taken away from the equation the program was able to comprehend what was happening and calmed down.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Top:

For the Top triangles all of the relations are right but the only problem is the bottom relation which is adding more than need over complicating the program. By adding a smart dimension to a system that already works, it adds unnecessary refinement because the triangle were already locked out. So this dimension was not needed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Eyes:

Lastly for the eyes, here was an extra relation that was extra and not needed in the equation. When the tangent was added It was a false dimension because the circle was not overlapping on a line. This doesn't not only over complicate  the program but also it invalidates it: by adding false information the program freaks out. So we simply deleted it and moved forward without the extra tangent relation.
