🌎 📐 Educational Model 🔍📊

At MiniWorld3D, education is one of our primary goals. In addition to actual Lessons published for Educators, here is this free and collaborative project for anyone to enjoy. Our regular models are also used by educators and the general public for learning purposes.

The Problem

We often think of cities being north or south of some reference, like the equator or the place where we live, but we rarely think about their elevation from sea level. This is probably due to the fact that most people in the world live near the coasts, at low elevations--and because elevation is not obvious on a map.

The Solution

Scale is the problem when wanting to visualize elevation, so by simplifying and contrasting each subject side by side, it is possible to clearly see the differences and be amazed!

This is the public, remixable Tinkercad source project, where I invite you to create more tiles, such as one for your city:

https://www.tinkercad.com/things/ieoDGhAWIAl-elevation-of-world-cities-miniworld3d

These visualizations can be completely digital (show them to students directly on Tinkercad), or physical by 3D printing them, whichever is your preference and capability.

This material is flexible and can used with a wide range of learners of all ages.

In this publication, I include some STLs but the idea is that you or your students create more, especially those that are relevant to you and your context.

  • What is the elevation of the place where you live?

  • Are there any tall landmarks or features, like towers, buildings or famous mountains?

  • How does your city and its landmarks compare to other ones in your region, country and the world?

  • Had you ever realized that some cities have such a high elevation?

  • Have you visited any of these places?

  • What is/would be like to be in these places?

The tiles can be personalized with flags, terrain stls of cities or even MiniWorld3D building models (just respect the original license please, you cannot publish or share a tile with a MiniWorld3D building on it, just for use in your classroom).

PRINT SETTINGS

Suggested parameters:

Perimeters: 2
Top layers: 3
Infill: as low as 12%, lightning suggested

Very easy and fast to print, by design.

No supports needed.

Tile shape allows interlocking them.

You can use the cut feature in your slicer to trim the lettering on top if you don't wish it to be so tall.

You can also pause and change filament color to have the lettering be a different color than the rest of the tile.
