A lithophane is a picture converted into 3d format by using more layers for darker pixels, once you hold it in front of  a lightsource the image appears very distinctly.

The lithophane was created using Lithophane Maker (Curved Lithophane Section), a free and easy tool to create lithophanes. The original image was provided as well as the settings used to make this lithophane would you want to recreate it in the tool.

Printing Info:

  • Use 5 border layers to ensure it is all neatly filled in
  • Use a white filament that allows light to pass through (Here I used Winkle Marble PLA)
  • Print it vertically for the details and use a brim to avoid it toppleling over

The image comes from the disney cartoon “Silly Symphonies - The Skeleton Dance (1929)”
