Some time ago, I inherited an American Silver Eagle that was not encapsulated. I ordered a package of 25 direct fit H-40 capsules thinking that I could also encapsulate some old large dollars I had, but I didn't realize the Silver Eagles are just a few millimeters wider than the large dollars. Silver Eagles are 40.6mm in diameter, while large dollars are just a bit smaller at 38.1mm in diameter. Thickness of large dollars varies but doesn't affect the fit in the capsule. Without a spacer, a large dollar inside of a capsule would simply roll around.

Since I still had 24 unused capsules and some large dollars I wanted to encapsulate, I decided to make my own spacers to see how challenging it would be. It turned out to be very simple. I made this spacer to allow for a snug fit around a large dollar so that it fits perfectly inside of an H-40 capsule. It's less than a gram of material and prints in just a couple minutes. I printed with 0.12mm layer height on the “Fine” preset just because the total time was negligible, and the result is a nice clean ring.

Also, I found out that proof strikes are just a bit wider when my Eisenhower proofs didn't fit. I added an additional design for proof large dollars that has an ever so slightly larger hole. I'm considering making spacers for half dollars but don't currently have the need.
