This little octopus waves his 8 little arms and flashes his 8 miniature eyes. His structure and body were made using 3d printed parts, a small motor, some LEDs, and a Smartibot robot controller to allow him to be remotely controlled.

3d printed parts: See 3d models below. I printed the body, base, and head on an FDM printer, and the legs on a SLA printer. This gave them a rounder shape without extra effort.

Hardware / other bits:

  • 1pc Smartibot robot controller
  • 1pc DC gear motor
  • 2pc LED assemblies: made freeform, using leftover white 3528 LEDs, soldered in series with a 480ohm resistor, and connected to a length of wire.
  • Various M3 hardware. This model makes extensive use of M3, 4mm long ‘heat set nuts'. I was improvising so I didn't keep track of the screw sizes that I used, so it would be best to have some handfuls of different lengths, primarily in the 10-20mm length.

Assembly: Print all of the parts, paint them, then screw everything together :-). Some tips are that the arms needed a lot of sanding and filing to get them to fit well in the base.
