Speed & RPM Key Holder Hanger

First off, this was a fun mechanism and I enjoyed working with them.

I took the time to sand the body down to a very fine grit, and then paint them with automotive filler primer. I then wet sanded them and painted them with multiple coats of automotive (and pearlescent) spray paint. I must say, they look very clean.

I painted the rim with a metallic spray paint (also designed for automotive use). Honestly the pictures don't do it justice.

I did make a couple of modifications to the original files. First, I made it so that the RPM numerals always stay the same colors as the tick marks. This is a bit more true to the cluster gauge from the make/year/model that the color matches. Secondly, I hollowed out the inside of the counterweight so that I could fill it with lead fishing weights. This adds about 50-75% more weight to the mechanism and makes it somewhat smoother.

I did try my hand and modifying the files so that when the keys are off the hook, the gauge reads max. The thought behind this was that it would match what the car the keys belong to are doing. However, I was unable to get a reliable mechanism working with the needle action reversed. I would pay another $5 for a version that does this.

Thank you for putting this model out there!

@NorseEngineer

Thanks a lot for your detailed feedback β€” and especially for the effort you put into finishing and painting, the result looks amazing! πŸš€

For your idea of having the needle drop instead of rise: good news β€” if you mirror all the parts (except the dial face with the numbers), the effect will be reversed, just as you wanted. The screw thread will be reversed too, but it still works fine. I actually designed it with that possibility in mind.

I really appreciate you sharing your experience and improvements (like adding weight and adjusting the numerals). It’s great to see how each maker personalizes the model!
