This article is part of a series documenting my transition from Fusion to Onshape. As a hobbyist focused on functional 3D prints, I share what I’m learning, what works, what doesn’t, and how my workflow is evolving.

My Background: SolidWorks > Fusion360 > Onshape

My CAD background started with SolidWorks. That shaped how I think about parametric modelling, assemblies, configurations, and design intent. I tend to build models that are structured, variable-driven, and reusable.

When I started 3D printing there weren't many CAD options, it was either OpenSCAD or pirated version of SolidWorks.  Fortunately Fusion360 was released and became the defacto tool i used for designing models for 3d printing.  It’s  was powerful, accessible, and became widely used in the maker and 3D printing community. But over time, the lack of key features and policy changes from Autodesk have built up, enough that I decided it was time to seriously evaluate alternatives.

This post explains why I’m migrating from Fusion360 to Onshape, what pushed me to look elsewhere, and why Onshape currently fits my needs better.

Why I’m Leaving Fusion360

While Fusion360 is capable, it never fully matched that way of working. Its focus has clearly shifted toward end-to-end CNC and manufacturing workflows,  something that adds very little value for me as a hobbyist focused almost entirely on functional 3D printing.

Fusion360 eventually became more frustrating than productive for my workflow. The main reasons I’m moving on:

  • UI Friction: The interface is cluttered, inconsistent, and (in my opinion) has gotten worse over time. Simple tasks often feel harder than they should.
  • Horizontal History Bar: This may be personal preference, but I strongly dislike the horizontal timeline. It makes navigating and editing complex models slower and less intuitive.
  • Weak Parameter & Configuration Experience : Dynamic feature suppression, configurable arrays, and clean variant control are either missing or fragile. Parameter-driven design often leads to rebuild errors instead of flexibility.
  • Poor Support for Reusable Design Rules: Most of my designs rely on consistent rules ( wall thicknesses, threaded insert sizes, hole standards). Fusion makes it difficult to share variables and reuse logic across projects, so it often feels like starting from scratch.
  • Free Tier Limitations: The 10 active document limit is extremely restrictive when building reusable assets and libraries. That limitation alone has pushed me away more than once and ultimately helped force this move.

Why Onshape Fits Me Better

Onshape is currently working far better with how I like to design and think about CAD. The things I missed from SolidWorks are not only present, but feel intentional and well-integrated.

  • Familiar, Structured Modelling:  The feature tree, parametric workflow, and overall modelling approach feel much closer to SolidWorks. Design intent is easier to maintain, and edits are more predictable.
  • Powerful Configurations: Onshape’s configuration system allows clean part variants, feature suppression, and parameter-driven options without fragile rebuilds. This opens up the options to design configurations that end users utilise rather than output every permutation of a design.
  • Strong Variable Support:  Variables are first-class citizens,  even supporting a reduced version of the Onshapes FeaturesScript. The dedicated variable studio ensures changes propagate across parts.
  • Cloud-Based & Platform Independent: Because Onshape runs entirely in the browser, it works on any machine, including Linux. No installs, no license juggling, no hardware dependency. 

Why Onshape Might Not Be for You

Anything that's free always has some caveats and Onshape is no exception. The following may well be non-negotiable for many users.  

  • All Free-Tier Designs Are Public: On the free plan, every document is public. If you need private projects or plan to develop commercial designs, a paid subscription is required (Costing significantly more than Fusion) . This is the primary reason why I would consider not using Onshape, however my designs are non commercial and usually already published with the source CAD files so I am not bothered. 
  • Always-Online Requirement: Onshape is entirely cloud-based. No internet connection means no access to your designs.
