Articulation

Articulation and Movement

When we talk about articulated prints, we often mean prints that can move without needing to be reassembled or print an entirely different model. There are a few ways for articulation, but some are harder, and others are easier

Options

  • The first option is ball and socket, like what is in the 13 series on Printables: they move like being an action figure and are sturdy (if in right material.
    • Pros and cons of ball and socket.
    • Pros: sturdy, easy to remix, good frame.
    • Cons: hard to design, wrong material may break, sometimes restricted movement, different remix license for each model.
  • The second option is just 2 hoops. You hook the 2 hoops around each other in your modelling software and it's pretty simple. You can add many more hoops than 2 but stability is always a problem
    • Pros and cons of using hoops
    • Pros: simple, beginner friendly, easy to make models that flop, if correct, long lasting.
    • Cons: not much stability, can be messed up, may be fragile, can't make a print stand up without a lot of help
  • The next option I'm going to divide into a few subcategories, which is outside assistance
    • In outside assistance, it needs something from outside, example one is a rubber band, found in stuff such as the articulated snowman and its big brother. It's easy and doesn't many cons.
      • Rubber bands pros and cons
      • Pros: easy, simple, useful cheap, sturdy
      • Cons: may need replacement
    • Sometimes screws may need to be used which can sometimes provide articulation.
      • Pros and cons of screws
      • Pros: easy to find, often cheap, common, prebuilt screw options in 3D model databases which can be downloaded, easy to customize
      • Cons: print problems, wrong size, too many screws
    • Finally, in this category is string, which is a cheap alternative, but it can be used in a variety of ways. I can't find any pros or cons yet as I am yet to try it.
  • The final one I'm going to put down are hinges which can be 3D printed or installed from a local hinge shop (idk). Hinges can be used in projects like infinity cubes and other projects a like.

More Options and Conclusion

To conclude, there are more options, but I have delved into a few today. This was also my first article and I'm just trying to work this out. Also credits to soozafone for the cover image.
