


My saddlebill stork is nearing completion. My test printing of a saddlebill stork has been delayed, first by some high-priority projects pre-empting the use of the printer, then by the needing to replace the PTFE tubes in the printer and the CFS. However, I've made some progress: one wing has been printed - twice.
This is BY FAR the most complex design that I've done so far. The issue is creating supports for such a delicate structure. I did my initial print using normal supports, and I thought I had enough of a gap between the supports and wing to allow removal, but I couldn't do it without destroying the wing. The second time was much better. I'll include those settings in the project file when I release it. This project will not be an easy print; it took me almost six hours to get all the supports off the first wing. I'll look to see if there's any way to improve that; others may be able to improve that as well. Even with the improved supports I broke the feathers in several places but was able to glue it back together. I thought about segmenting the wing, but that would create its own problems.
I'll start printing the other wing tonight, but I'll see if there's any way to improve the supports first. After that, I'll print the stand, and I'm expecting that to be a much easier section of the print.
If anyone has a good article on support settings for complex and delicate prints, I'd love to see it. I'll research it as well tonight. I know that Teaching Tech and Uncle Jesse also have some good articles on that.
