Many model railroad hobbyists have discovered the value and utility of using 3D printing in the development of their layouts. The quality of fused deposition modeling (FDM) is at the level now that 3D printed structures rival the quality found in commonly available models. Finely detailed models of locomotives and rolling stock are being readily made with resin printers.
Model railroading has over time seen the improvement in the craftsmanship of models of buildings and rolling stock. Hobbyists have developed better techniques and the attention to detail has sharpened. 3D printing has become a natural adjunct to the hobby. It allows modelers to add details and components to their projects that might not have been previously possible.
For those interested exploring the possibilities of 3d printing in their modeling efforts, there are many resources available. Printables has hundreds of models on its site in many different scales. There are many talented designers making excellent models available to hobbyists. One in particular is Kim Brumble “kabrumble” who posts his designs on Thingiverse. At last count Kim has 287 models available for free download and they are awesome. I probably have 15 of his models on my layout.
