Wonderful idea. It took me a month to order the parts and tweak the parts a bit. But I really love this design. it is so cool and the highlight of my desk!
My only complaint is I bought a cheap $4 EL panel that came with a cheap USB inverter. In a quiet room, I hear the high pitched sound typical of cheap electronics.
@thatdecade I really like your design and your idea! the annoying sound thing happens to me with some of them, some cheap inverters sound a bit more than others,
Just a suggestion, there is a cheaper alternative to EL Panels... LED Backlight Modules. They are the same as a small 3mm LED but in a flat panel form. The large size is 45x86mm. You can change the color by adding colored vinyl to the display size. The modules can be found on adafruit and might make a good remix for someone more skilled than i am! (edited)
