for me, an improvement would be to integrate the thread in each side of the spool instead of having the thread as a separate element. I'm printing it as it is, because it is already a very good desing.
@duub I prefer the cylinder aswell, but then it won't fit indeed. I will try to make the version with a narrower cylinder soon :)
I used my velcros to hold the refill together and until now that worked fine. But I get it you want more security.
2. The holes are a bit close indeed. You need to really bend the filament to have it in there. In my version you can press-fit your filament end into the side of the spool.

Great idea!. Unfortunately I've got shock with 3mm mounting ball joins and could not, for the love of god, get them off, so I've modified your design. Cheers!

Easy to mount and dismount! Thought that would be better with integrated thread, and this one is easier to secure and unbind the refill with velcro
